Americans are totally confused about a British obsession - buttering the inside of sarnies. One Yank took to Quora as they couldn’t believe what they’d seen on TV cookery shows from the UK, the Express US reported.

They said: “I’m American. I often notice on British cooking shows that they often spread butter on the inside of sandwiches. You never see this in America. Is that realistic? Will the average Briton put butter in the inside of say, a ham sandwich?”

Jeff Dray left them in no doubt - describing unbuttered bread as an ‘abomination’. He said: “We most definitely do butter our sandwiches. It’s unimaginable that anyone would make a sandwich with dry bread. I’m very fussy about the kind of butter too.

“A piece of ham on dry bread isn’t a sandwich, it’s an abomination. That’s what you eat when you’re lost in the woods, struggling to survive.”

Alan Higgins was stunned that Americans were so lacking in good sandwich making skills: “I have just asked my daughter, she lives in America. And apparently it is true, yanks don’t butter their sandwich bread!!

“What fresh hell is this? How do they stop the tomatoes making the bread soggy without the waterproof butter shield?”

Australians obviously had to get in on the act. The surprising thing was that one agreed with the Brits. Lewis Phrane said: “Australian here. What kind of monster eats a sandwich made from naked bread?!? I don’t care if people substitute other spreads for butter because they don’t like or can’t eat butter. But the whole idea of making a sandwich and not spreading something on the bread before filling it is outrageous. It’s moral turpitude.”

Even Canadians agreed with the Brits. Kerri Rempel said: “Canadian here. Y’all don’t butter your bread south of the border? What the hell?” Clearly the buttering sandwich issue is one which brings the world together. Except America, of course.
