The bare shell that was once one of Wales' most famous music venues
Newport Centre has hosted countless famous names but has now almost been reduced to dust
One of south Wales' most well-known music venues has been reduced to rubble just a few months after work started to demolish it. Newport Centre has hosted countless names over the years including David Bowie, Sinead O'Connor, Run DMC, and Alice Cooper.
The centre has hosted hundreds of gigs since it opened in 1985 with a list of performers as long as your arm – read more about the black book chronicling its shows over the years here – but it is now being redeveloped as part of a multi-million-pound project.
The site's swimming pool was closed last year after being deemed beyond viable repair and Newport Centre closed its doors for good in March. Plans are afoot to replace it with a £90m Coleg Gwent campus while a brand new leisure centre will be built on a brownfield site near the riverfront. The new £19.7m leisure centre will not include a concert venue, essentially bringing an end to mid-sized gigs in Newport.
Work has been ongoing to demolish Newport Centre this summer and is scheduled to complete in September but pictures taken at the weekend show little remains of what was once one of south Wales' best-loved music venues. Months into the work there is little other than rubble with the centre's recognisable frame only of the only remaining signs of its past life.
