Sunday lunch is an all-round legend of a meal and we don't know many who would turn their noses up at one. From crispy roasties and Yorkshire puddings, to perfect gravy and tender meat, a Sunday roast is the traditional jewel in the British cuisine crown and a great one can make your weekend.

In Wales we're pretty good at it too, and there are plenty of delicious places to enjoy a cracking Sunday dinner that's (almost) as good as the one your mam makes... Take part in our survey down the bottom of this piece and tell us where you love to go for a roast.

1. The Angel Hotel, Abergavenny

Served in their atmospheric Oak Room, The Angel's Sunday roast is a special one. Dine on roast leg of lamb or sirloin of beef with all the accoutrements next to the open fireplace - perfect in the autumn or winter for a cosy afternoon treat.

The mains are nice but if you're having a starter, try the Angel Prawn Cocktail. It's pretty, but it's also packed with tasty prawns in that delicate pink sauce.

2. The Nags Head Inn, Garthmyl

Proper roasties, fluffy Yorkies and local meats at the Grade II listed former coaching Inn near Welshpool.

Try the Neaudd Farm pork from down the road which comes with crackling and the Inn's 'proper' gravy.

3. Stubborn Duckling, Aberaeron

Serving 'spectacular' Sunday dinners - as per the highly rated, Observer Food Monthly Awards in 2022 - the Duckling has just landed a place in the 2023 Good Food Guide. Pick from braised feather blade of beef or rump of Welsh lamb, and more, at this tiny restaurant in a former florist's shop where chef/owner Daniel just wants to serve " good, consistent and simple" food.

4. Heaney's, Cardiff

Tommy Heaney's restaurant just celebrated its fifth birthday and on his impressive, daily menu, his Sunday lunches are a top choice among the capital's plethora of roasts.

Their Welsh lamb is unrivalled, as are the duck fat roasties. Tap up a few oysters ahead of the main event to make your Sunday a bit more special.

5. Plantagenet House, Tenby

This Tenby restaurant is both quirky and delicious and their creamy leeks are divine. With a choice of local Pembrokeshire lamb, beef and pork and a homemade veggie option, it's definitely one you'll have to book.

6. Hare & Hounds, Aberthin

Hare and hounds Sunday lunch

Recipient of the 2018 Bib Gourmand in a regular of the Michelin Guide over the years, The Hare & Hounds is run by local boy Tom Watts-Jones who cut his teeth in award-winning Anchor & Hope and the Michelin-starred St. John in London.

Sample Sunday roasts can include Wesh Black Beef Rump, pan fried pink bream or Middlewhite pork loin. Sister pub, Cardiff's Heathcock, has equally as good a roast, with pan fried hake, 28-day dry aged Oriel Jones sirloin or a whole baked plaice. You're odds onto a winner if you visit either.

7. Felin Fach Griffin, Brecon

This place is a dreamy Sunday lunch destination thanks to its gorgeous look and location and that's even before you get to the food.

Some Sunday specials have included confit duck leg, creamed potato, pancetta, pak choi, red wine and hake, new potatoes, tenderstem broccoli, samphire, beurre blanc. And the traditional roast beef or pork, of course!

8. Gwaelod y Garth, Cardiff

A lovely dinner, here. All the usual suspects AND you can also choose the "I want it all" dinner with beef, pork, lamb and turkey with all the trimmings and more.

Let's not forget their 'Car park carvery' - hot roast rolls with roasties and gravy to eat in or takeaway.

They also do a literal dog's dinner for your furry friends, two pork sausages with gravy for £3.

9. Theodore's, Menai Bridge

Chef Rich Netherlands opened his own place, named after his son, after training at Treysgawen Hall Hotel and worked at The Midland in Beaumaris and The Slate, Tal-y-Bont and his food has been praised by none other than Stanley Tucci. Now his Sunday lunches are highlighted as one of the top in the area. Giant Yorkshire, roasties you just look at and drool and succulent, well cooked meats.

10. Forage Farm Shop, Vale of Glamorgan


Choices are roast estate (Penllyn – the farm behind the shop and kitchen) topside of beef, roasted loin of pork, nut roast, and pan-fried seabass. Read our review, here.

11. The Lansdowne, Cardiff

A deliciously reliable Sunday dinner, The Lansdowne does roasts as well as it does the rest of their menu - and that's pretty nice, too.

Plenty of meat, veg and always more gravy, yum. Sister pub, The Grange, does an lovely roast dinner, too.

12. Bar 44, Cardiff

A whole platter-full of deliciousness is served Sundays at Bar 44, known first and foremost for its tapas and gin. Recommended for two or more, this roast comes with the choice - for meat-eaters - of a 35-day dry aged picanha (type of cut) of Hereford beef with horseradish alioli and served rare or an overnight slow-roasted Duroc pork belly with Amontillado sherry apple sauce.

They are served with a chorizo Yorkshire pudding, jamón-fat roast potatoes with rosemary, garlic and thyme, manchego cauliflower cheese, savoy cabbage with herb butter, roast carrots with honey and thyme and, to top it off, a smothering of red wine gravy. Not a meat-eater? Fear not. For veggies, you can have a celeriac steak with the same sides, although the meaty aspects are substituted for something equally as delicious.

13. Tiny Rebel, Cardiff, Newport


Available at their Cardiff city centre, Newport and Rogerstone branches, the Tiny Rebel roast has a strong fan following for their Herfordshire beef, quarter chicken with creamed leeks, pigs in blankets and Kentucky battered parsnips and more. They also do their Yorkshire pudding wraps served with roasties, if you don't want the full shebang.

14. The Priory, Caerleon

With locally sourced produce and at £25 for two courses per person, The Priory's roast is a delicious bargain.

Choose from cider glazed chorizo or grilled sardines as a starter and move on to crispy belly pork (sample menu).

15. The Plough & Harrow, Gower


A traditional, cosy pub in the heart of the Gower with melt-in-the-mouth roasts and lovely surroundings. And if you're interested, it's one of Tom Parker Bowles' top 50 Sunday lunches in the UK, as per his Daily Mail feature.

Their sample menu is definitely oggle-worthy with starters such as Penclawdd laverbread and cockles - quails egg and whole Camambert and the crowning glory of the mains menu must be their leg of Gower Lamb with wild garlic and rosemary stuffing.

16. Hiraeth Kitchen, Cowbridge

When the starters kick you off with the likes of Welsh lamb faggot with cockles or fish pie, you know it's going to be a smashing Sunday. Mains include featherblade beef with a parmesan crust or lamb rump. How can you not love Sunday roasts when you can dine on ones like this?

17. Mesen, Cardiff

Found in Cardiff's Rhiwbina suburb, Mesen - which we reviewed here during its weekday service - the Sunday lunch is cooked over coals including the beautifully juicy, smokey whole chicken - a gorgeous way to present and cook a "roast". A must mention, too, to the dinner plate-sized Yorkshire puddings, too. You'll leave feeling satisfied and that your tastebuds have been thoughtfully looked after.

18. The Cawdor, Llandeilo


Quality cuts of meat are the backbone of this delicious roast, which comes looking as pretty as a picture.

Welsh beef and lamb are usually on the mains menu and the starters include duck liver pate and trio of smoked and cured salmon.

19. Grove of Narberth, Pembrokeshire

A gorgeous treat of a Sunday lunch in the middle of leafy Narberth and one of Wales' finest hotels. Book a table in their Artisan Rooms restaurant for a menu of carefully crafted dishes including black garlic nut roast with tomato fondue and Pembrokeshire potatoes as well as roast chicken and roast beef.
