A comedian has described Newport as if "Sports Direct built a theme park" in a stand-up West End comedy club show. The video featuring Cardiff comedian Leroy Brito has been circulating around social media platforms with lots of people jumping to their city's defence.
The comedian, who is from Butetown, told his audience he would "paint a picture" for them of what Newport was like. He said: "Who's been to Newport? Let me paint a picture for you if you've never been to Newport." For the latest Newport news, sign up to our newsletter here

He continued: "Imagine Sports Direct built a theme park and Greggs won the catering contract." But it's safe to say that not everyone was the biggest fan of Leroy's tongue-in-cheek wording when he shared the moment on Instagram recently.
One person said in defence of the city: "That's so unfair. People who agree haven't lived anywhere else I guess. You don't know what you have until you see other places." Another noted: "I lived in Caerleon when I was in uni and loved Newport. TJ's nightclub was amazing." Someone else was a little more sympathetic to the joke, adding: "Fuming but he's not wrong."

But others thought it was hilarious and took the comments with a pinch of salt. One of them said: "I hate that I was in Newport Sports Direct today and he couldn't be more spot on." Another Instagram user added: "I'm Newport born and bred and this is hilariously true. Spot on mate."
It is not the first time a comedian has criticised somewhere in Wales as part of a comedy sketch. Thanyia Moore once described Porthcawl as a "s***hole" after spending 10 weeks there. She said Porthcawl was a "s***hole where rats go to do drug deals" in a stand-up Comedy Central Live show, which also got a mixed response from people in Wales. "People are proud and don't see it as a s****y little town. I don't. You look at the sun rises and sunsets you get here – you could be in the Costa or Barbados", said Sean Bingham, a resident from Porthcawl said afterwards.
