A heating expert has revealed there is one thing you can do to save money on your power bills - to the tune of £300. Customers of energy companies like E.On, EDF, Octopus, British Gas, OVO, bulb and Utilita have been urged to make a change in order to slash the cost of their power.

Andrai Carcu, director of Emergency Electrics and Heating 24/7 said households should be keeping a close eye on appliances which are on standby - and also keep an eye on your thermostat. Mr Carcu explained some appliances can use up to 10 watts an hour whilst on standby, costing around 28p per hour, amounting up to £24.53 over the course of a year. And as the Cost of Living crisis continues, he advised switching out lightbulbs in your homes for LED ones.

He said: “Now is the ideal time to take advantage of natural light during daylight hours by keeping curtains open and enjoying the Autumn sun”. He continued: “Ensure your home is properly insulated and consider upgrading to a more efficient heating system, like a condensing boiler.

“Using a programmable thermostat allows you to control your heating and set it to lower temperatures when you’re not at home or at night time.” And on thermostats, Mr Carcu also had a warning over the temperature and said: “Dropping from 21° to 18° could save you over £300 per year.”

The Energy Saving Trust said that The average UK household spends £55 (45kgCO2e) a year powering appliances left on standby. Standby is the energy used by certain appliances when not in use and not switched off at the plug.

Energy prices are very high - and industry regulator Ofgem is expected to announce next Thursday that the energy price cap will be increased to 28.94p per unit of electricity and 7.42p per unit of gas from the start of next year.

It means that the typical household’s bill will rise from £1,834 per year to £1,931, according to experts at consultancy Cornwall Insight.
