People who are above state pension age are set to get a good amount of financial assistance in the weeks remaining in 2023. Before the end of the year, there is an array of different payments which they could get which amount to more than £1,000.
The money can be split into four separate payments - and most should be paid automatically, the Record reports. The payments include the cost of living money, the winter fuel cash, Warm Home Discount Scheme and DWP Christmas bonus.
Here is the rundown of what people of state pension age can expect before the start of 2024.
Now until November 19: £300 cost of living payment window
The £300 payment is being sent out automatically to the account used by claimants for their Pension Credit, which means nobody needs to apply for the financial support. Those who qualify need to have been receiving one of these benefits between August 18 and September 17 - Universal Credit, Income-based jobseekers allowance, Income-related employment and support allowance, Income Support, Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Pension Credit.
The payment is the second of up to three Cost of Living Payments being made this financial year with them all being tax-free, will not count towards the benefit cap, and will not have any impact on existing benefit awards.
Older people - or friends and family - can quickly check their eligibility and get an estimate of what they may receive by using the online Pension Credit calculator on GOV.UK here. Alternatively, pensioners can contact the Pension Credit helpline directly to make a claim on 0800 99 1234 - lines are open 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
November/December: £600 Winter Fuel Payment
More than 11 million pensioner households are set to receive a one-off payment of up to £600 over the coming weeks to help with higher energy bills. Pensioners will imminently receive in their bank accounts £600 winter fuel payments to help them heat their homes this winter. The exact date has not yet been announced by the Department for Work and Pensions last year started paying out on November 23 so it is likely to be around that point.
This year, as it was in 2022, the money is comprised of the winter fuel payment is worth between £100 and £300 - with an additional £300 pensioner cost of living payment. The money will appear in bank statements with the payment reference starting with the customer’s national insurance number followed by “DWP WFP” for people living in England, Scotland and Wales, or “DFC WFP” for people in Northern Ireland.
Those eligible will get a letter telling them: how much they’ll get, which bank account it will be paid into - this is usually the same account as their State Pension or other benefits.
If you do not get a letter or the money has not been paid into your account by 26 January 2024, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre. People born before September 25 1957 could get between £250 and £600 to help you pay heating bills. You usually need to live in the UK.
October - March: £150 Warm Home Discount Scheme
The money is paid directly by the DWP to energy suppliers between October and March. The Warm Home Discount Scheme for winter 2023/24 is now open with most energy providers and gives people on certain benefits £150 off their electricity bill.
The scheme eligibility rules changed last year and means some people may no longer qualify and others might need to apply as they will not receive the discount directly. Eligible households may also be able to get the discount off their gas bill instead - if their supplier provides them with both gas and electricity, just contact them once the scheme opens to find out.
If you’re a credit customer the £150 will be added to your electricity account and if you’re on Pay As You Go or Prepayment, you’ll be sent a voucher that you can use to top-up your meter.
December: DWP £10 Christmas Bonus
This is a one-off, tax-free £10 payment automatically made to people in receipt of State Pension if they meet the eligibility during a specific qualifying period, which is typically the first full week of December (4-10 for 2023)- find out more here.
