Former Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins is reportedly poised to make a sensational return to Welsh football as part of a potential takeover of Newport County.
The club's supporters' trust says advanced talks have already taken place with two parties interested in making a potentially 'significant investment in the club'. One of those parties is believed to be led by Jenkins.
The Neath-born businessman stepped down as chairman at the Swans in 2019, three years after selling the club to a US-based investment group, although he had remained a director at the club up until last month.
He was reportedly close to a takeover of Charlton Athletic back in 2020, and was also tipped to make a similar move for Blackpool a year previously.
However, it seems he could now be poised to take over at Rodney Parade, with County seeking a cash injection of just over £1million.
A decision is set to be made at the trust's next general meeting on September 28.
In a statement, the Newport County AFC Supporters’ Trust said earlier this month: "The Board of Directors is in advanced negotiations with the two potential investor groups who are interested in making a significant investment in the club in return for a majority shareholding, This is a complex process during which the Board is taking advice and guidance from the Football Supporters Association (FSA).
"We are on track to be able to present a bidder to Trust members within the month of September as set out at the meeting and as covered in the media.
"An approval to sell a majority shareholding in the Club can only by made by Trust members themselves at a Special General Meeting.
"A provisional date for this meeting has been set for Thursday, 28th September at Rodney Parade at 7pm. A formal notice for the meeting will follow shortly. Please put this date in your diary and make every effort to attend."
