Cricketer-turned-presenter Andrew Flintoff has been pictured for the first time since his horror accident while filming BBC's Top Gear programme.

In December of last year Flintoff had been driving an open-topped three-wheel Morgan Super 3 at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey when he sustained facial injuries and broken ribs in the incident. He was treated at the scene and then relayed to hospital.

He quit the show not long after and has now returned to cricket.

The sportsman, also known as Freddie Flintoff, was pictured at Cardiff's Sophia Gardens during England's one-day international against New Zealand.

Flintoff, 45, isn't working with England in an official capacity but was invited to be with the team in Cardiff and is known to be a good friend of England's managing director Rob Key.

He had visible scars on his face and tape on his nose and wore a bucket-style hat along with sunglasses during fielding drills with the players.

"He's obviously an England legend and it's just nice to have him around the group," England skipper Jos Buttler said.

"He's not been brought in with any specific role, just to be around and observe.

"A few of the lads can pick his brains a little bit and he's settled in really well. It's great to have him with us. Just for this series."

Filming of the 34th series of Top Gear was suspended after the incident. In March of this year, the BBC apologised to Flintoff for the injuries he has sustained and said they would support him in his recuperation.

A statement from BBC Studios earlier this year said it had “concluded its investigation into the accident at the Top Gear Test Track in Surrey last December, which regrettably injured presenter Freddie Flintoff”.

It continued: “We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery. Under the circumstances, we feel it would be inappropriate to resume making series 34 of Top Gear at this time.

“We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but it is the right thing to do, and we’ll make a judgement about how best to continue later this year. This has also impacted the production team, who we continue to support.”

He joined the show as host alongside Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris in 2019.
