The legendary rock band Green Day were spotted playing a secret gig at a London pub. The iconic punk trio were seen in the cosy boozer rocking out for unsuspecting fans ahead of another intimate gig at Camden's Electric Ballroom.

The band, comprising lead singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool, recently announced their new album "Saviours". They played an unannounced set at The Marquis pub in Covent Garden - where at one point the police arrived.

Will Gamble, 27, a regional operations manager, said: "So my friend had a tip-off from a good friend close to the band that the show was happening at a bar on Chandos Place. We actually walked into the wrong pub initially and sat in The Harp a few doors down being like 'hmm surely it can’t be here?!' - turns out we were over-excited and turned into the first pub on the road that The Marquis was on.

"Anyway we sank our pints quickly and walked into the Marquis at about 7.30pm, where there was a sign saying 'Busk Till Dawn@9pm' there were four other people at the front of which one had been tipped off after bumping into Mike Dirnt’s wife earlier that day that it was there."

One of the punters put the location of the event on Reddit, prompting a huge rush of people to the venue. At 9.30pm a support band came on and played some covers - including hits from Green Day. Then at 10pm the trio took to the stage and performed their set to a crowd of adoring fans - and regular pubgoers.

Will added: "[Afterwards] we stood outside for like an hour in disbelief, along with the police turning up due to crowds on the road. The first album I ever bought was Bullet In A Bible in 2005 - they are the reason I love music. This felt like a full circle moment, I never thought I'd have the chance to see them at a smaller venue than when I saw them at Shepherds Bush Empire in 2012 - let alone a pub."
