Netflix is set to release part one of the final season of The Crown on Thursday (Nov 16). The series is set to enter the late 90s and early 2000s where the story will come to a climactic end.

It has already been confirmed that the season will cover the Royal Family from 1997 to 2005. However the years won't be spread evenly across the 10 episodes, as the first four episodes of part one are set to show the months leading up to the tragic death of Princess Diana.

Princess Diana was the first wife of King Charles III and the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry. She became popular with the public and the media for her unorthodox approach to charity work compared to the other members of the family.

After the public collapse of her marriage, Diana's reputation survived and she allegedly began a relationship with Dodi Fayed - the son of Egyptian businessman Mohammad Al-Fayed. In 1997, she accepted an invitation from Fayed to join him and his family in the south of France.

In the early hours of August 31, 1997, Princess Diana was involved in a high speed crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris as her driver was said to be fleeing away from paparazzi. Dodi Fayed and the driver, Henri Paul, died inside the car.

Diana was taken to hospital where she later died at the age of 36. Dodi's bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, was seriously injured during the crash, but was the only survivor.

The princess' sudden and tragic death led to a mass outpour of tributes from across the globe. Members of the public left flowers, candles and cards outside the gates of Kensington Palace for months after her death.

The late Queen Elizabeth II paid tribute to Diana in a live broadcast. Her funeral took place in Westminster Abbey on September 6 where a young Prince William and Prince Harry walked in the funeral procession alongside Charles, the late Prince Phillip and her brother Lord Spencer.
