The rear of Cardiff Central railway station was evacuated after a train caught fire. South Wales Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue were called to the city-centre station.

One member of staff said a small train was on fire at platform eight. Emergency services asked people to evacuate the back of the station. A fire service spokeswoman told WalesOnline at 5.28pm that the fire had been extinguished and crews had left the scene.

The 3.50pm Pontypridd to Barry Island service was stopped at Cardiff Central after reports of a small object on fire underneath one of its carriages. The fire was put out by platform staff using a handheld extinguisher and the fire service attended as a precaution. Passengers were removed from the train and moved to a different service. Platforms 6 and 7 were temporarily closed but have since reopened. Platform 8 remains closed while an assessment of the train is taking place. Cardiff Central station has remained open throughout and there is only minor disruption to a small number of services but passengers are advised to check for the latest travel information for their journey.

'Debris under train caught fire'

We understand the fire started when debris under a Pontypridd-to-Barry Island train caught light as the train was braking. It was a very small fire which was put out by staff with no damage to the train. Platforms six, seven and eight closed, but then six and seven reopened within 15 minutes, while eight is still shut ahead of an assessment which is expected to take place at 6pm. Platform eight services have been moved to different platforms and trains are mostly running as normal.

Fire service has left the scene

A fire service spokeswoman said: "We were called at 4.26pm and sent three fire engines to Cardiff Central railway station after a report of a train on fire. The fire was out before arrival and a stop time of 4.51pm was given, so it was just an inspection [from firefighters]."

She did not have an update on any damage caused by the fire, or the cause. We'll try to get an update on any potential delays as soon as possible.

'A sense of confusion'

Our reporter at the station, Bethany Gavaghan, isn't in a position to see platform eight, where a train reportedly caught fire. People have been evacuated from the back of station and the rear entrance is shut, although people are still able to get in through the front entrance. Bethany said there was one fire engine and one police vehicle in the car park at the rear of the station at 4.32pm. Trains on other platforms appear to still be running. "There's a sense of confusion," said our reporter. "Everyone's asking, 'What's going on?'"
