Married At First Sight's Luke Worley confessed to seeking professional help after being made to leave the reality TV show and having ‘cut himself off’ from those around him. Wednesday (November 15) night’s episode on E4 saw the return of all of the couples, whether separated or together, reconvene at one last dinner party.
Viewers learned that many of the couples who left, or were made to leave the experiment, had parted ways, making for some awkward situations. One of the major shocks of the night was when Jay Howard walked in by herself, without (now ex) groom Luke on her arm. Luke was one of the last to arrive at the pre-dinner drinks.
The aftermath of the breakdown played out on screens, with both Jay and Luke crying at the dinner table. Following the emotional scenes, Luke admitted how much of a toll the experiment had taken on his mental health.
Uploading a photo of himself entering the dinner party to his Instagram Story, Luke admitted he sought counselling. He wrote: “So after this reunion I cut myself off as I was one of the lowest points of my life. I had to go to counselling for weeks to recover from MAFS as I lost myself and I didn’t know who I was anymore.
“Since MAFS started airing I have had hate, including death threats, and it’s not acceptable. Where you love me or hate me there is no need for scummy comments to me or any of the other cast. Will talk about my experience and why reality TV is toxic in the coming weeks to spread awareness to other wanting to take part.”
Last night’s episode saw Jay confirm to her fellow contestants that the pair were no longer together, after the pair were keen to continue their relationship following their early exit from the show. Jay was embraced by the rest of the group as they asked: "Where's Luke?"
Explaining to her co-stars, Jay said: "He literally, basically just said, like, we are better off just being friends. I asked him what he wanted, but he couldn't answer the question."
"Did it come out of the blue for you?" Laura Vaughan then asked, to which Jay responded: "No, I was expecting it, but, I would have preferred to have made it work, it's just you need both of you to put the effort in."
As emotions ran high during the dinner, Luke explained that he didn’t feel like his best was good enough for Jay, and that he hadn’t tried ‘harder’ at a relationship than he had with her. Jay briefly escaped the dinner table, overwhelmed with emotions, but was soon followed by a number of the cast, reassuring her.
After the pair were consoled separately, Jay returned to the table to comfort Luke, who was still teary after their exchange. The experts, who were watching via a live feed, expressed their wish that Luke would console Jay, not the other way around.
A Channel 4 spokesperson said: “We are in regular contact with Luke and continue to offer him, and the rest of the cast, tailored support. The wellbeing of cast and crew on Married at First Sight UK is our utmost priority at all times, throughout production and beyond. We have robust contributor care protocols in place and support is available to contributors before, during and after broadcast, including access to independent psychological support."
