You'll often hear people complaining that a prison sentence just isn't long enough when a serious crime has been committed. As you'll know from reading our court reports, sentences for the same crime can often differ.
A judge or magistrate will look at the facts and consider the harm done and how blameworthy the offender is. It's up to them how much weight to give each factor, while working within a set of guidelines.
They'll consider aggravating factors, for example if that person wrongly blamed others, or whether they need to reduce sentences for pleading guilty. Every offence has its own starting point and maximum sentence - and it's the latter that we've based this quiz upon.
