Simpson 'very fortunate' to receive minimum ban

The former chair of the FA's Race Equality Advisory Board Yunus Lunat believes Jack Simpson was lucky to receive only the minimum match-based suspension after admitting to making an abhorrent racist slur towards former team-mate Rohan Luthra.

The defender, who was axed by Cardiff in August, was banned for six matches and fined £8,000 after a report revealed he had racially abused Luthra, 21, during the club's pre-season tour to Portugal. You can read the full, shocking details here.

In their report, the Regulatory Commission took into account factors such as Simpson's admission, his apologies and show of remorse, seeking professional support and his previous disciplinary record and character, as well as his contract termination at Cardiff. However, even taking into account the aforementioned considerations, Lunat told Sky Sports: "Jack Simpson is very fortunate to have received the minimum match-based suspension.

"Rohan Luthra is the one of the highest-playing role models for South Asians in English football. To be subjected to such language in the safe environment and company of his own colleagues can only serve to deter young players from South Asian backgrounds."

Kick it out release statement

Anti-discrimination sports charity Kick It Out have released a statement to say there is "no space for racist abuse" following the charge handed to Simpson.

Kick It Out CEO Tony Burnett told Sky Sports: "Kick It Out acknowledge the charge handed to Jack Simpson. There's no space for racist abuse between team-mates, or anywhere in the game, and it is reassuring to see the individual responsible being held to account for his actions. Our first thought when discrimination occurs is always with the victim, and we applaud the courage of the victim in this case for coming forward.

"In this situation, as in all incidents of discriminatory abuse, there can be no winners and we hope that the perpetrator has learnt from this incident to ensure it is never repeated. Education plays an essential role in shifting attitudes and it is encouraging to see The FA include one to one education as part of the sanction. We know from our own work in this space the impact that this can have in changing mindsets. We would encourage anyone who experiences or witnesses abuse to report it to us at Kick It Out."

However, Luthra's father, Dr Sunny Luthra, was disappointed by the organisation's lack of contact since the incident. Writing on X: Box ticking exercise. Well done. This is a sarcastic comment if you haven't already figured it out." He added: "It's the lack of contact from @kickitout which I'm alluding to. Pointless response to a situation they actually exist for."

Dr Luthra then told Sky Sports: "Racism is unacceptable in any form, anywhere, especially in football. Hopefully, the player learns from this and I hope it acts as a deterrent for this type of unacceptable behaviour."

Ex-West Brom star speaks out on Grant future

Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Carlton Palmer believes Karlan Grant is likely to return to The Hawthorns and be integrated back into Carlos Corberan's squad.

The winger has been a regular fixture for Cardiff on the left wing under Erol Bulut, but recently revealed he had received no contact from his parent club since moving to the Welsh capital on loan this summer.

Corberan recently said he would take stock at the end of the season and assess Grant's performance and progress, but Palmer thinks there's every chance that, with increased investment into the Baggies, the Midlands club is likely to welcome him back and fork out on what are understood to be lofty wages at Championship level.

"Corberan has stated that the door is open for Karlan Grant, who left West Brom in the summer on a season-long loan to Cardiff, to return at some point," Palmer said. "I think many were surprised when Karlan was allowed to leave in the summer on loan, but I think this was more to do with his salary and cost cutting done by West Brom rather than do with Corberan," Palmer, who played for West Brom between 1984 and 1989, told Football League World.

"Corberan likes versatile players, and Karlan was Albion's top scorer in 2021/22 with 18 goals. He's one of those players, he can play anywhere across the front line.

"With talk of an impending takeover, and with West Brom currently sitting in seventh place in the Championship, level on points with the play-off positions, if Corberan is allowed to bring in players in the January transfer window, he could well bring back a player who is playing regularly in the Championship and only have to find his salary not a fee.

"Grant will still have two years left on his contract if he is not recalled in January, so there is every chance he will return to his parent club, whether it is sooner or later."

Rinomhota makes debut in game against Collins' Nigeria

Andy Rinomhota made his international debut this afternoon, starting in Zimbabwe's 1-1 draw with Jamilu Collins' Nigeria.

Rinomhota was handed the No.10 shirt, prompting fellow Bluebird Kion Etete to brand him AR10 on Instagram, a nod at Aaron Ramsey's initials and number at Cardiff, and started in midfield alongside Luton Town midfielder Marvelous Nakamba. Collins began the match on the bench for the Super Eagles and was brought on in the 85th minute. Unfortunately, Rinomhota had been brought off three minutes earlier. The match ended 1-1.

Elsewhere on the international front, Callum Robinson started for the Republic of Ireland last night, but was hauled off at half time in the 1-0 defeat by the Netherlands.

Neither Dimitrios Goutas nor Manolis Siopis were involved in Greece's first match of the break, a 2-0 friendly win over New Zealand. They don't play again until Tuesday, when they take on France. Alex Runar Runarsson was on the bench for Iceland's 3-2 defeat by Slovakia on November 16. He will hope to be selected for tonight's Euro qualifier against Portugal.

Ebou Adams featured for the first half of Gambia's 3-2 defeat by Burundi on Thursday, however, with his next future hopefully coming against the Ivory Coast tomorrow. Romaine Sawyers started St Kitts and Nevis' goalless draw with St Lucia on Thursday. They take on Guadeloupe tonight.

At youth level , Rubin Colwill, Tom Davies and Eli King all played in Wales Under-21s' 1-0 win over Iceland, usurping them at the summit of the group in their Euro qualifier.
