Sarra Elgan says she has "no words" after Ugo Monye experienced racial abuse whilst covering a rugby match.

Welsh presenter Elgan and Monye were part of the TNT Sports team covering the Exeter Chiefs v Gloucester match at Sandy Park on Sunday, where Chiefs snatched a dramatic last-gasp victory.

Monye revealed via social media that one fan allegedly ran through the crowd and shouted "N****, n****!" at him. The former England international branded it as "disgraceful" and claimed that not a single person challenged it after a scuffle ensued. You can read about what happened here.

Writing in a re-post to the initial Monye statement, co-presenter Elgan said: "Absolutely no words. Those who were in ear shot, and said nothing should almost feel as culpable as the individual who shouted. Why are we still so far away."

Chiefs have since released a statement condemning the incident, apologising to Monye and launching a full investigation.

Elgan posted a second comment on the incident after some people disagreed with her stance on those who witnessed what happened, writing: "I’ve had some comments challenging this. As Ugo said, it was not reported there and then, and I stand by my friend and colleague that someone who was in ear shot should’ve have reported it."

One person replied to Elgan's initial tweet saying: "Sarra - you're wrong. Yes - this vile performative outburst should be harshly dealt with but the crime - and it is a crime - is the perpetrator's and his alone. Others will have had their reasons for staying silent - shock, fear, disbelief - but they are not "almost as culpable".

A TNT Sports statement read: "Racism is completely unacceptable and has no place in our society. TNT Sports is deeply concerned by Ugo's experience after the Exeter Chiefs match against Gloucester. We fully support Exeter Chiefs' efforts to launch a full and immediate investigation."
