It's no secret that the cost of living crisis is continuing to put a squeeze on peoples budgets, with energy bills remaining high. However, one woman claims a 'secret' setting on her washing machine has helped keep her bills low.
When it comes to kitchen and utility appliances, the general rule is that the ones that have more moving parts use the most energy. For example, tumble dryers, washing machines and microwaves.
However, as a way to help Brits keep costs down, a money-savvy mum has taken to TikTok to share a 'secret' button that could help reduce energy bills this winter. Explaining how the 'little-known' setting works, TikToker BudgetingMumOfficial told fans: "Some simple ways to save some pennies on your laundry bills!"
Urging people to follow her 'hack', she went on: "Wash at 20 degrees, this can reduce energy usage by up to 62%!" She added: "Use a stain remover before you wash, so you can wash on a lower temperature."
The mum-of-two says most washing machines tend to be automatically set to 40 degrees, which can make paying for your energy at home more expensive. But many people fail to remember to change this setting, which she says could slash bills by up to 62%.
According to consumer champion Which?, since 2013 all washing machines in the UK have an option on the control panel to help save energy. Research conducted by Which? experts shows turning the temperature down on the cottons program from 40 degrees to 20 degrees can indeed push down costs by an average of 62 per cent.
Going into more detail, Which? said: "This is because washing machines need to use less energy to heat water to lower temperatures." However, the company did warn "cleaning power" didn't work quite as well at this temperature, and so recommended switching to a liquid detergent, adding: "It should be enough for everyday cleaning."
However, experts do advise washing bedding, towels, and other items that harbour germs the most, at 60 degrees to ensure they are thoroughly cleaned. According to CDA Appliances, 60 degrees "is the perfect temperature for killing bacteria, viruses and removing stains," though this means spending a bit more on your bills.
People flocked to the comment section to praise the Midlands-based mum for her helpful tip. Tess replied: "good idea for the stain removers with low temp." However, Charlie said: "I don’t find it cleans at 20!! But feel like a proper adult hanging on the line."
Laura suggested her own cleaning methods: "i do my washing up in cold water now with antibac fairy save loads on smart meter too persil is good for stains and comfort for smell." Maureen shared another cost-saving tip: "Turin the thermostat down on the boiler and electric shower and turn off when used."
