A mum has worked out a cunning way of staying warm in her home without putting the heating on. The Tiktoker who goes by the name the Duchess of Thrift has come up with a stream of tips to keep everyone going in the cost of living crisis.
The Express reports that she has been telling people how to stay warm without costing a fortune by putting the boiler on - and in her new video which has been viewed more than 60,000 times she spoke about starting the day off.
The content creator told viewers: “It’s definitely getting a little bit colder, so I’m going to share my top eight tips for getting started on the cold mornings without putting your central heating on.”
She went on: “Start by setting the alarm for half an hour earlier than you need to. Stay in bed and turn your electric blanket up to three.
“After half an hour with the electric blanket on, you’ll be so warm that you’ll want to get out of bed.”
The mum instructed her followers: “While you’re lying in bed for half an hour, put your Oodie or a jumper in the bed, so that’s warmed up. So as soon as you spring out, you can put a warm one on.
“Then when you go and get your cup of tea and have your morning, we put your clothes in the bed. You can turn the electric blanket off, but they will get nice and warm. “
Electric blankets have emerged as one of the most cost-effective solutions to staying warm in recent years. This is because the electric consumption of the appliance is comparably lower to other heating methods, including central heating and space heaters.
It can be used in several ways, according to the Duchess of Thrift, who uses the blanket to warm up clothes before getting out of bed.
“When you go to get your cup of tea and have your morning wee, put your clothes in the bed,” explained the TikToker. “You can turn the electric blanket off but they will get nice and warm. I will be putting warm clothes on that have been warm in my bed.”
For those who find the low temperature in their room too big a deterrent for getting out of bed, she advises using a space heater for a short blast of warmth.
Using extra garments like wrist warmers will also prevent the body from getting cold, she explained. She works from home and explained: “Now I work at home all day and I have no heating. I put my plug in heated blanket on my office chair, but I still on top of it. Sitting on top of it. I swear it feels warmer than having it over me.
“But then I’ll also put a blanket on my lap. The blanket that I’m sat on costs about 1.5 pence an hour to run, and then because I’m sat on it all, the heat rises up through my body and the blanket traps it in. So it’s really warm. And then finally, these wrist warmers, I know you can get electrical gizmos and everything, and I did try them last year, but they were rubbish.”
And she wears gloves too! She said: “These are from the nearly new cashmere company, and they’re made out of old recycled jumpers. So if you’ve got any holy old jumpers, what they’ve done is make a hole in the seam for your hands and just hemmed it back. You can make those out of old jumpers because your hands get so cold working at home and typing. You can still make a cup of tea. You could cook the tea wearing those. These are an absolute godsend. So they’re my top tips for keeping warm all day and getting out of bed on these chilly, chilly mornings.”
